The foursome of  (L-R) Norm Hulse, Lynn Timbs, Bill Toye, and Grant Lane scrambled their way to a 7 under, 29 on the host course Belle Acres this past Tuesday, June 16, 2009.

Lynn Timbs also won the closest to the pin prize on #9 with a shot that stopped 134″ away.

The Industrial League play each Tuesday at 4 p.m. on the Belle Acres course. Call the course at 931-526-8834 for more information.

KORTHS SUCCESSFULLY DEFEND TPGA FATHER-SON TITLE

CROSSVILLE-The father and son duo of Paul and Wes Korth from Cookeville successfully defended their title Sunday at the 30th Annual TPGA Father-Son Championship at Fairfield Glade.   

The Korth’s were in third place after the first round and rallied to record the highest single day point total to win by 6 points. The Korth’s won last year in 2008 and previously in 2005. Paul is a former Celina resident and a graduate of Celina High School.  Wes is a member of the Tennessee Tech golf team. 

Winning the first flight was the team from Luke and Bradley Sewell from Athens. They recorded 124 points during the two rounds. The winning family tradition continued as Luke and Shane Sewell also won the second flight by 5 points.   Nashville ’s Jerry and Brian Rogers won the third flight after earning 70 points for the championship. The event is reconciled in points based on a fixed score to par. The highest combined point total for the team is determined the winner.

The finals for long drive contest were held at Saturday’s cookout. In the Tiger Division (Back Tees) it was Memphis ’ Will Garner who took the longest of the long honors with his best drive of 292 yards. The Nicklaus Division (Blue Tees) was won by Nashville ’s Ted Chapman with is drive of 274 yards. The Palmer Division (Red Tees) was won by Franklin ’s Scotty Hudson and his long drive of 212 yards.

In 2010 the event will return to Stonehenge Golf Course on Father’s Day weekend.

With three teams tied at -24 it will be an exciting final round. The first round leaders in the Championship flight, Adam Boyd  and Steve Tomsic are now tied with the teams of Blake Garrison and Dustin Thomas and the team of Polk Brown and Jonathan Cox. Brown – Cox and Garrison – Thomas both scored 13 under during Saturday’s play to tie Boyd – Tomsic who posted a score of 11 under after scoring -13 on Friday. The Championship Flight will play at Ironwood Golf Course beginning at 1:10 p.m. while the First Flight plays at White Plains stating at 12:20 p.m. Play also continues at Cookeville Golf Club with Second Flight play getting underway at 12:40 p.m. Play in other flights begins at 7 a.m. on all three participating courses.

First flight scores include -15 on Saturday by JB Rittenberry and Steve Flowers vaulting them into the flight lead.

Boyd and Tomsic Lead First Day Play

Two teams, (Polk Brown – Jonathan Cox) and (Blake Garrison – Dustin Thomas), are tied at -11. There are also two teams tied at -10, (Shawn Floyd – Kelly Wells), (Mark Frasier – Jeremy Phillips).

Bobby Nichols Scramble Underway

c10eba30f671d0b9d58aed4a04cb2991The Bobby Nichols Golden eagle Scramble gets underway today with 7:00 a.m. tee times at Cookeville Golf Club and Ironwood Golf Course while 7:30 a.m. is the beginning time at White Plains Golf Course. A list of tee times can be seen here. Uppercumberlandgolf.com will post scores and updates throughout the weekend as they become available.

The Scramble is the largest tournament in Middle Tennessee and the largest fund raiser for Tennessee Tech Athletics. The tournament is played over three days at the three area courses mentioned above. A fourth course, Southern Hills, will host the Barbeque dinner, putting and chipping contest, and a million-dollar hole-in-one contest sponsored by Cumberland Automotive.

Benson and Penley Set Season Best Score on Scramble Tour

MOUNTAIN RIDGE – The team of Michael Benson(R) and Harold Penley holed an eagle, 2 birdies, 5 pars, and 1 bogey to score 27 points during the 7th week of play on the Scramble Tour sponsored by Miller Light. The total is the highest score posted in the 2009 season on the Tour which uses a modified Stableford scoring system. 26 points had been the highest winning score in two different weeks this season and 28 is the all time highest in the two years of Scramble Tour play. Mountain Ridge Golf Course awarded the pair a round of golf each for the win.

Belle Acres Golf Course is the site of next week’s play on Wednesday, June 17,2009. Tee Time is set for 5 p.m. and new players are always welcome. The Scramble Tour plays a 17 week season and rotates play among Cookeville, Tennessee area golf courses each week. Players points are accumulated toward a season championship.
